The UnPanderers: Dream Podcasting Setup

Dream Podcasting Setup

The Ultimate Podcast Setup

After creating the Podcasting Setup Guide, we started daydreaming about our perfect setup.  Here's what we came up with.

Structure

First, I'd want to be isolated and out of the house.  With the kids getting older, bumping into things, yelling, and shouting is becoming more common place.  Also, our wives tend to think of podcasting as just a fun thing we do, but we take it a little more serious than that.  So, meet our podcasting abode hidden among the thick foliage of Holly and Juniper resting on a little plot of land I'll call "Serenity Now".

Heating and Cooling

Gotta stay comfy regardless of the climate.

Noise Reduction

This is the main reason for creating a little oasis.  Those mini houses let you build from a kit, so you can add these items to a blank canvas.  I'd add extra mass to the walls using the mass loaded vinyl, insulate with the Roxul Rockboard, and then cover that with sound deadening and absorbing panels.

Furniture

The "U-Shaped" desks are my favorite.  I always have work sprawled and strewn about.  Plus, the little table would be great for a nice face to face podcast with some relaxing chairs.  Guests can sink into the extra large bean bag chairs.  Who wouldn't imbibe?

Audio Equipment

As the number of people involved grows, I hope I can accommodate them with a sizer input mixer and their own quality mics, filters, stands, and headsets.  I hope I wouldn't need a cloud lifter to filter out noise, but I included it just in case.

Video Equipment

I'd like to continue the video chatting podcast as I feel there's a chemistry built up among people who can visually interact.  Let's catch and revel in all those quirks and mannerisms that make us who we are.  The "On The Go" equipment would be for traveling and location based reporting.

Electronics

Since this podcast is currently being run out of a van down by the river, power protection, and mobility are key.  Use the Google Pixel Phone for quick browsing and hook the beastly laptop up to a multiple monitor set up - four should do it.  Plug them into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with surge protection and a battery backup to avoid any unexpected interruptions.

Networking and Storage

Since the remote video and audio quality is dependent on the internet connection, I suped-up the networking with an unnecessarily expensive wireless router.  Hardwire it all to a gigabit switch and tie in the network attached storage for saving all that 2k and 4k video data.

Power

If the apocalypse comes, you'll be prepared to podcast all about it with Solar Power, a Power Wall, and a generator... until your zombie neighbors come over for a bite to eat.
